The Strait of Hormuz reopened, $WTI crude plunged nearly 12% to ~$83/barrel, the S&P 500 hit all-time highs, and Wall Street collectively lost its mind — in the good way. Bloomberg's Balance of Power covered Trump's Iran nuclear suspension announcement live as markets surged ~1.5%. The Dow added ~1,000 points. $UAL ripped 11%. $RCL jumped 10%. Energy stocks, however, got absolutely cooked — down 8% over 12 sessions while Nasdaq ran its longest winning streak since 2009.
But here's the thing: Rapidan Energy's Bob McNally called the move 'unwarranted' on Bloomberg, noting the naval blockade is still active and it could take 3–4 months minimum for oil supply to normalize — and potentially years for gas infrastructure. Amy Wu Silverman at RBC flagged a rare 'spot up, vol up' dynamic and is quietly telling clients to buy downside protection while puts are still cheap. Meanwhile, Fundstrat's Mark Newton thinks the March 30th low was sustainable and expects a 3–5% pullback by mid-May — a buying opportunity, not a funeral.
On earnings: Q1 growth is tracking at 13% with forward 12-month estimates at 17–18% — the sixth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth. BlackRock's Rick Rieder is calling semis up ~97% YoY and flagging buybacks potentially hitting $1 trillion. $NFLX somehow managed to beat revenue and still crater 10% by whiffing on Q2 EPS guidance and letting Reed Hastings ghost the board. The market giveth, Reed Hastings taketh away.
