Let's set the scene. September's jobs report dropped 29,000 new payrolls against an 84,000 forecast, unemployment ticked to 4.2%, and wage growth came in at a soft 3.1%. The bears smelled blood. The market... rallied. Classic bad-news-is-good-news pivot, because anything that keeps the Fed off the rate-hike trigger is apparently worth celebrating with a Nasdaq +1.19% close on Friday.
The bond market spent most of the week being genuinely terrifying. The 10-year Treasury yield hit 5.29% intraday on September 30, its highest in over two decades, before pulling back to 5.24% by week's end. Noted market bear Jim Bianco made waves by going long Treasuries at 5.17%, extending his index duration above 6 years. When the permabears start buying bonds, you pay attention. Meanwhile, the VIX crept up from 14.21 to 16.39 across the week, not exactly panic territory, but not a nap either.
The biggest sentiment mover nobody fully priced in: $SLB is buying heat management company Kelvon for $4 billion and pivoting hard into data center infrastructure, partnering with Meta and Nvidia. An oilfield services company is now in the server cooling business. If that sentence doesn't perfectly summarize 2026, nothing will. On the AI side, $NVDA hit a record market cap of $5.7 trillion, driven by AI agent demand and a jaw-dropping $150 billion buyback. Cloudflare, Akamai, and Fastly surged on the thesis that AI agents generate exponentially more web traffic than humans, with Cloudflare up 121% from its February lows.
The week's clearest losers in chatter: $NKE (already covered, but worth noting China sales are down 22% and the stock is near 2013 levels), $DIS (fell ~3.5% on job-cut reports), and $BA (down 11% year-to-date despite a brief Boeing bounce Thursday on a NASA Starliner funding lifeline). Carnival, however, was a quiet winner, reporting record Q3 revenue with ~$2 billion in net income and debt trimmed below $24 billion. The cruise-to-recovery trade is still sailing.
The geopolitical backdrop remains the wildcard nobody can model cleanly. The US-Iran war is disrupting Hormuz shipping, OPEC+ delayed its capacity review, and Putin is holding diesel hostage until sanctions lift. Oil dipped below $90 briefly, which spooked even the bears, before climbing back. The Pentagon is reportedly deploying a third carrier strike group to the Middle East. That's not a footnote, that's a chapter.
Q4 kicked off with markets somehow in the green, a bond market at 24-year highs, AI stocks at record territory, and an oilfield company selling server cooling solutions to Nvidia. If your portfolio makes sense right now, you're probably not paying enough attention.
