Let's be honest: this market is giving us whiplash. The S&P 500 dropped from 7,744 on October 28 all the way to 7,541 by November 2, a slide of roughly 2.6% in four sessions, with the VIX spiking from 17.2 to 21.15 along the way. Then, almost overnight, the fear gauge collapsed 20.26% in a single session on November 4. The Dow surged 3.03%. CNBC anchors stopped doing their worried-eyebrow thing. For about twelve hours, everything was fine.
Then November 5 happened. Per Bloomberg's midday coverage, the Nasdaq dropped 4.4%, the S&P fell 3.2%, and the Dow shed over 1,279 points in what anchors called the worst single-day drop since April of last year. The culprit? Post-election panic over AI regulation. Democratic wins at the state level brought with them ballot referendums restricting data center buildouts, and Wall Street decided to price that in all at once. $NVDA fell nearly 7%, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped over 8%, and names like $SNDK and Bloom Energy ($BE) got absolutely torched, falling 20%+ each. Even $DDOG piled on with an 18% drop after underwhelming Q4 guidance of roughly $1.2 billion, representing a growth deceleration from 35% to 26%.
The bull case for AI infrastructure hasn't disappeared, it's just gotten louder arguments against it. Bloomberg's podcast coverage featured analysts pointing out that CapEx projections for AI still target $3-4 trillion by 2030, and that very little physical data center execution has actually been impaired on the ground. Meanwhile, AppLovin ($APP) absolutely bucked the trend, surging 32% intraday after beating Q3 estimates, its biggest single-day gain since February. So no, not everything with AI exposure got crushed. Just most of it.
The macro backdrop adds another layer of fun. The 10-year Treasury yield is sitting at 4.95%, the Bank of England just raised rates for the first time since 2023, and the Richmond Fed president went on CNBC to remind everyone that rates aren't going anywhere fast with headline inflation at 3.6% and core at 3.1%. The one silver lining: Treasury markets are finally acting like a safe haven again, with 2-year yields falling faster than 10-year yields in a bull steepening move that's pushing out the timeline for the next Fed hike from March to June.
Then there's the Hormuz situation, which is still very much a thing. Four tankers are reportedly ablaze after hitting mines near the Strait of Hormuz, US forces carried out strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island, and oil is oscillating between fear premium and de-escalation bets like it's on a trampoline. Emirates reported a 66% profit drop in its first half, so the real-economy damage is showing up in earnings already.
The VIX crashing 20% one day and markets selling off 3-4% the next isn't a contradiction, it's just the market being a market: briefly euphoric, chronically anxious, and always finding a new reason to run in both directions at once.
