Let's start with the headline no one can argue with: the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index surged 88% in Q2 — its best quarter in history — while the S&P 500 posted its strongest quarter since 2020, up roughly 14%, and the Nasdaq roared 19%+. Bloomberg Podcasts was wall-to-wall chip talk all week, and for once, the hype was justified by actual numbers. $TSMC got a Morgan Stanley upgrade citing its foundry monopoly and the AI shift toward inference and custom silicon. Meanwhile, $KLAC surged 9% on a single session and is up ~150% year-to-date. That's not a typo.
The macro backdrop was, to put it diplomatically, a lot. US-Iran traded drone and missile strikes, the Strait of Hormuz became a geopolitical chessboard, and yet Wall Street shrugged and bought chips anyway. Cleveland Fed President Hammack warned AI data center build-outs are now a genuine inflation driver — the Fed literally citing GPU farms as a price pressure. $NKE beat earnings with $11B in sales but fell 4%+ after-hours because cautious executive commentary is the new earnings miss. $CMCSA announced it's spinning off NBCUniversal, popped 17% intraday, closed up 4.5% — classic Wall Street cool-down. SpaceX is joining the Nasdaq 100 on July 7th, which will trigger forced ETF buying and approximately one million Twitter threads about Elon.
The real sleeper call of the week: healthcare. Hedge funds are the most bullish on health care in five years per S3 Partners data, with the sector gaining ~10% relative to its lows in a month. When the AI trade gets crowded enough that rotation into pharma looks exciting, you know we're in late-innings territory — or the beginning of something genuinely new. Taiwan margin loans up 160% year-over-year says the former.
