What a week to be alive, or at least to be holding energy stocks. The S&P 500 started October with a four-day win streak that peaked at 7,818 before sliding back to close Thursday at 7,765. The Nasdaq had it worse, dropping 1.25% on Thursday alone after the Financial Times reported OpenAI is tracking toward roughly $50 billion in annualized revenue, about $20 billion short of analyst expectations. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped ~3.4% on the news, and suddenly every AI infrastructure bet looked a little less obvious.
The biggest sentiment whiplash of the week centered on the narrow AI trade. Cramer's Mad Money episode on October 8th captured the mood perfectly: $NVDA, $AVGO, and $GOOGL all got hit hard while $HD (Home Depot) surged more than 3%. The rotation into defensives was real, and the market breadth data backs it up: 338 out of 500 S&P components finished higher on the day the index fell 0.5%, meaning the index drop was basically a semiconductor tantrum in a trench coat. Meanwhile, $CMG ripped 6% on Starbucks takeover chatter and $GFS rose after TSMC reported strong earnings, even as $TSM shares dipped on sky-high expectations.
On the macro front, consumer confidence cratered to 81.9 against a consensus of 90, the lowest reading in over 12 years. The 10-year Treasury yield is hovering around 5.28%, which is doing nobody in growth equities any favors. Jim Bianco went on CNBC this week and actually turned bullish on bonds after six years of being bearish, arguing that 5%+ yields across the curve now represent fair value. That's not nothing. When a longtime bond bear waves a white flag, it's worth noting.
Energy was the week's unambiguous winner. With Hormuz tanker attacks hitting wartime highs and Brent crude trading around $103 a barrel, the energy sector was up roughly 3% on Thursday when everything else was bleeding. Shell is expecting record refining margins. OPEC+ delayed its capacity review. Putin is holding diesel hostage. If you were long energy going into this week, you are not complaining about anything right now.
One story flying under the radar: $MU (Micron) rose 4% on strong analyst commentary even as the rest of the chip sector collapsed. Its forward PE sits at just 6.6x with a PEG ratio of 0.04x, which is either the most obvious buy in semiconductors or a value trap dressed up in cheap clothes. Seeking Alpha's quant system is screaming Strong Buy, and at least one IBD analyst is calling memory names the setup for a Q4 bonanza. The bull case is real; the question is whether the AI revenue disappointment overhang fades fast enough for anyone to care.
Credit spreads are quietly widening too: triple-C bonds are near 1,000 basis points and high yield is at 346 basis points, per NewEdge Wealth CIO Cameron Dawson. Financial conditions are still technically loose, but the direction is tightening. The VIX at 15 says the market is calm. The credit market says something slightly different. Usually one of them is lying.
