ON Semiconductor Down 40% in 3 Months: Investor Day Flop or Buying Opportunity?
Social sentiment is split on whether ONSEMI is a fallen knife or the semiconductor dip nobody wants to catch
Ticker Ratings
$ONSEMI just held its investor day and the crowd responded by hitting the sell button. Shares fell 9% on the event, adding insult to injury for a stock already down 40% over the past three months, dramatically underperforming its semiconductor peers. If you threw a party and everyone left early, this is what the stock chart would look like.
Here is where it gets interesting. The company presented a total addressable market of $213 billion at investor day, which sounds impressive until you realize that is actually a step down from the $243 billion figure they were waving around in June. The difference? The pending Synaptics acquisition, which has not yet closed and is expected to finalize around mid-2026. So management basically revised their own hype downward in front of investors who already showed up skeptical. Not a great look.
The backdrop is not helping either. The Fed just hiked rates to a range of 3.75% to 4%, the first increase in three years, with Fed Chair Kevin Warsh signaling more could be coming. The 10-year Treasury yield is now sitting at 5.0%, which compresses valuation multiples on growth-adjacent names like ONSEMI. Higher rates mean investors demand more from a stock's cash flows today, and right now ONSEMI is not delivering that clarity.
Retail sentiment on social platforms is cautious-to-bearish. The dominant narrative is that ONSEMI is caught between a slowing automotive semiconductor cycle and the hype gravity well of AI chip names like $NVDA and $AVGO, neither of which it can compete with directly. In a market where attention is scarce and capital is getting more expensive by the quarter, being in the middle of the pack is basically the same as being invisible.
The bull case, thin as it is right now, rests on the Synaptics deal closing cleanly and TAM expansion becoming real in 2027. Bulls also point to ONSEMI's exposure to electric vehicles and industrial automation as long-term secular tailwinds that are being temporarily drowned out by macro noise. But with the stock already cratered and the investor day acting as a confidence check that failed, the chart needs to stabilize before anyone credible starts pounding the table.
Falling 40% and then hosting a presentation that accidentally made your story smaller is a rough two-act play. The third act needs a clean acquisition close and a rate environment that stops punishing anyone without "AI" in their pitch deck.
