Mag 7 Earnings Week: Can MSFT and META Survive the AI Capex Reckoning?
With Google already showing negative free cash flow from AI spending, the market is bracing for more of the same from the remaining Mag 7 this week
Ticker Ratings
It is the most consequential earnings week of the summer, and Wall Street is walking into it with sweaty palms. $MSFT and $META report on July 27th, followed by $AAPL and $AMZN on July 28th, and the stakes could not be higher. After Google flashed negative free cash flow driven by AI infrastructure spending, traders are now asking the same uncomfortable question about every hyperscaler: what exactly are we getting for the $725 billion in projected AI capex?
The backdrop is not exactly soothing. Oil is sitting at $100 per barrel as Houthi attacks strangle Red Sea shipping lanes, Ukraine continues hitting Russian oil infrastructure, and the strategic petroleum reserve is projected to run dry by October. The bond market is pricing in a 40% chance of a rate hike at the July 29th FOMC meeting, with the 10-year Treasury yield pushing toward 4.72%. That is the environment in which four of the most important companies on earth are about to open their books.
The Mag 7 already had their worst single-session performance in recent memory, according to The Traveling Trader on YouTube, and the playbook has shifted. Previously, announcing a massive AI capex number was a stock price catalyst. Now, per Bloomberg Podcasts, macro concerns including triple-digit oil and inflation fears are complicating that dynamic entirely. Return on investment for AI spending is no longer a philosophical question for long-term bulls. It is the question on every earnings call this week.
For $META, the bull case is straightforward: advertising revenue has been resilient and Llama-based products are generating real engagement. The bear case is that Meta is spending like a government and the payoff timeline keeps getting pushed out. For $MSFT, Copilot adoption data will be the thing to watch. Azure growth has been strong, but if free cash flow turns negative the way it did at Google, the market will not be forgiving. $AAPL faces its own China demand questions while $AMZN needs AWS to carry the show as its retail margins stay thin.
Industrials, meanwhile, are quietly benefiting from both the AI data center buildout and defense spending driven by the Iran conflict, with XLI valuations now at parity with tech relative to the S&P 500. Sometimes the boring trade wins the noisy week.
This earnings season is less about the numbers and more about the narrative, and right now the narrative sounds a lot like a very expensive question with no answer yet.
