Bitcoin Hits $80K as AI Stocks Stumble: The Rotation Is Real
Crypto's best week since 2023 isn't random luck. It's a deliberate pivot away from overpriced AI names.

$BTC just printed its strongest three-day rally since 2023, punching through $80,000 for the first time since May after a 23% surge over seven sessions. And no, this is not a meme. The move is backed by a legitimately interesting confluence of factors that YouTube's finance creators spent most of Sunday unpacking.
Bill Miller IV on CNBC traced the rally to two main engines: first, a short liquidation event described as the largest in crypto over the past five years, and second, genuine rotation out of AI-adjacent equities as investors start asking uncomfortable questions about ROI. When $MU, $AMD, and the broader Philadelphia Semiconductor Index are down 22% from their June peak, money has to go somewhere. A chunk of it is apparently going into Bitcoin.
The macro backdrop is adding fuel. The US Treasury intervened jointly with Japan on July 31st to buy yen, the first such US action since 1998. It also signaled potential deployment of the nearly $1 trillion Treasury General Account to suppress long-end yields. Apollo's Torsten Slok called these moves 'spotty' since fundamental forces (a 5-6% GDP budget deficit and stubborn inflation) keep pushing rates higher anyway. But the signal matters: more liquidity globally tends to be a tailwind for risk assets, and Bitcoin is the loudest risk asset in the room right now.
Then there is the geopolitical wildcard. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent launched 'Operation Economic Outcast,' threatening to cut any country doing business with Iran out of the dollar system entirely. Jeremiah Babe on YouTube argues this kind of dollar-weaponization is exactly what accelerates BRICS-adjacent interest in alternative financial rails. Whether you buy that thesis or not, the narrative is clearly feeding crypto sentiment, with gold also up sharply on the same day.
- Bull case: Massive short liquidation cleared out weak hands, global liquidity is expanding, and rotation out of AI gives BTC a clean entry narrative.
- Bear case: The 10-year is sitting at 4.7% and the 30-year briefly hit 5.32%. Risk-free rates at those levels eventually compete with everything, including crypto.
The Investor's Business Daily crew framed the broader rotation as a healthy pin prick in the AI bubble rather than a market meltdown, noting midcaps and small caps are at all-time highs and money stayed invested rather than fleeing to cash. That is the kind of environment where Bitcoin historically does its best impersonation of digital gold. Whether it holds above $80K into September midterm volatility is another question entirely, but the shorts who bet against it this week are currently having a very bad time.
